The Carbon Lighthouse Association is thrilled to showcase our partnership with Cox Enterprises, which has resulted in offsetting 2362 tons of CO2 so far. The cable and automotive company discovered CLA after working with Carbon Lighthouse Inc. to lower their facilities’ carbon footprint, and decided to utilize our offsetting service for their aviation department in April 2020.
Cox Inc. is leading the corporate aviation industry when it comes to eco-friendly practices such as investing in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), and CLA is allowing them to neutralize their remaining fuel emissions until 100% SAF is technologically possible.
Cox’s donations have allowed CLA to purchase 2362 carbon allowances from the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) on their behalf. When we purchase allowances, we hold them indefinitely, meaning they can never be used to pollute. This practice effectively lowers the carbon cap even more for fossil fuel power plants that are legally required to participate in the cap and trade auctions, preventing pollution before it happens and making polluting more expensive and inconvenient.
Our partnership’s impact goes even further, because the money that state governments earn from selling allowances is reinvested into energy efficiency and renewable energy in participating states. When applying RGGI’s ratio of earnings and impact (based on their latest reinvestment report) to Cox’s donations alone, we can infer that Cox’s investments in green government reform will result in about $116,000 in lifetime energy and health bill savings for the general public in the Northeast, as well as about 135 tons of additional CO2 emissions reductions.
